Neocolor I water-resistant wax oil pastels are must-have medium much loved by artists, technical designers, teachers and Fine Art students alike. Internationally known by its own name and a pioneer in the field, Neocolor I revolutionised the world of drawing and art teaching from the time of its creation in 1952 in the Caran d’Ache workshops. Its excellent coverage, the smoothness of texture, the luminosity of the 60 colours in the entire range, together with its resistance to water and extreme lightfastness, make it one of the pillars of the Geneva-based Manufacture. The Neocolor I’s properties enable countless applications on all kinds of backgrounds or materials. Suited to endless forms of artistic expression – from strokes to flat-wash, sgraffito or hot-wax painting, its colours remain as luminous as ever on coloured or dark materials.
Neocolour II Water Soluble
Neocolor II water-soluble wax oil pastels highlight the enormous innovative capabilities of the Maison Caran d’Ache. Created in 1972 as the continuation of the famous Neocolor I range, they offer boundless creative possibilities for artists and beginners alike. Basing their work on the existing excellent qualities – exceptional coverage, smoothness and extreme lightfastness –, the craftsmen of the Manufacture added water solubility, a property greatly appreciated by connoisseurs of the Maison from all manner of artistic fields and from school age upwards. Neocolor II can be used for all forms of creativity, ranging from drawings on dry or wet materials, monotypes, impregnation, wet drawing, glazing or rainbow gradation. With 84 colours, the entire range offers almost unlimited scope for the imagination, to the point where even experienced artists once more see things through the eyes of a child, thereby liberating the purest of all creative energies: that of the sheer wonderment evoked by colours.
Neopastel
With its soft, velvety texture and high pigment content, the Neopastel oil pastel offers artists and Fine Art teachers and students a flexible medium with strong colours. Developed in the Caran d’Ache workshops on the advice of expert pastel artists, Neopastel is a must with its huge range of 96 luminous hues, incorporating a wide selection of grey, warm and cold tones. Neopastel offers excellent coverage making it suitable for a wealth of applications and artistic combinations: from lines to flat-wash, blending to stencilling, or batik effect to sgrafitto in multiple layers. Its wide 10mm diameter, refined texture, water resistance and excellent lightfastness make it ideally suited for use on diverse materials, be they tinted or dark. Non-drying, non-oxidisable and heat resistant, Neopastel is also soluble in turpentine and can be used with ease for oil painting on canvas.

For glossy metal effects in Gouache- or water-colour paintings on less absorbent surfaces such as paper, cardboard, painting board or canvas (not suitable for gypsum, metal or plastic!). Use: Mix required quantity of Aqua-Bronzes shortly before application with little water on a palette. Can further be diluted with water. The amount of added water influences the opacity and gloss of the colour
Oil
Iridescent metal effect on oil paintings or other pre-primed surfaces, such as wood, metal or gypsum. Use only in combination with bronze medium (50 032) – containing cumarone resin. When used on absorbent surfaces, we recommend an additional pre-treatment with turpentine substitute (50 019) and thinned bronze medium. Use: Mix 3 parts Oil-Bronze and 2 parts bronze medium with a painting knife – shortly before application. If requested, thin with e. g. turpentine substitute; dries wipe and water-resistant. Colour layers remain soluble to oil of turpentine (50 102) or turpentine substitute after drying.

Working with Schmincke’s finest extrasoft pastels leads you back to the origin of colour and is a real painting experience rather than simple drawing. They contain only the purest medium fine ground artists’ pigments, which are in the highest possible concentration. Contrastingly, the binding agent content, is kept to a minimum, which ensures a stable compound. In order to guarantee the highest quality it is necessary to manufacture Schmincke pastels using special recipes which avoid the use of machinery during manufacture. ‘Worm extruders’ form the pre-kneaded dough into round skeins, which are then detached by hand and cut in a wirestrung frame. The damp sticks have to dry for around eight days before they can be labelled and packed by hand. This is a costly and time consuming process, however it is the only way Schmincke can guarantee homogenous quality and smoothness in all the production cycles, in order that the artist can be assured that his favourite colour shade is consistant throughout our range of finest extra-soft artists’ pastel colours. After a brush has been cleaned the cleaning agent needs to be itself removed from the brush. This is especially true in the case of oils, or where spirits have been used. Our brush soaps are designed specifically for this. In addition they have in them animal fats, which put the natural lubricants back into your natural hair brushes. Recommended. Wash the brush soap itself out with warm water, shake out the brush and leave standing upright in a jar with the bristles exposed to the air.

Russian black sable, also known as high quality Russian fitch hair, lies directly between artist Chungking bristle and the finest Kolinsky red sable, but still gives the painter the benefits of red sable; its stiffness allows for bristlelike strokes, only smoother without marking the paint layers. In larger sizes black sable brushes have great colour carrying capacity. Excellent for delicate blending and smoothing out ridges, it is a favourite among portrait and realist painters. It is the most stable oil painting brush in the whole assortment. In 1887 (same year as ourselves!), Gustave Sennelier established himself as a colour merchant on the Quai Voltaire in Paris. Sennelier’s passion for colour chemistry and focused pigment research led to the development of a distinctive oil colour manufacturing process that has been employed for generations. Winton Oil Colours are a range of moderately priced oil colours suitable for artists requiring good quality colour at a uniform and affordable price. Notwithstanding price, Winton has a high level of pigmentation which provides good covering power and is stronger than many artists’ quality ranges. Winsor & Newton formulation, manufacture and quality control ensure Winton is a product of absolute excellence. The range of colours is chosen according to mass tone (colour from the tube), undertone (bias of colour when in a thin film), strength and relative opacity. When used on absorbent surfaces, we recommend an additional pre-treatment with turpentine substitute (50 019) and thinned bronze medium. Use: Mix 3 parts Oil-Bronze and 2 parts bronze medium with a painting knife – shortly before application. If requested, thin with e. g. turpentine substitute; dries wipe and water-resistant. Neocolor I water-resistant wax oil pastels are must-have medium much loved by artists, technical designers, teachers and Fine Art students alike. Internationally known by its own name and a pioneer in the field, Neocolor I revolutionised the world of drawing and art teaching from the time of its creation in 1952 in the Caran d’Ache workshops. Its excellent coverage, the smoothness of texture, the luminosity of the 60 colours in the entire range, together with its resistance to water and extreme lightfastness, make it one of the pillars of the Geneva-based Manufacture. The Neocolor I’s properties enable countless applications on all kinds of backgrounds or materials. Suited to endless forms of artistic expression – from strokes to flat-wash, sgraffito or hot-wax painting, its colours remain as luminous as ever on coloured or dark materials.
Neocolour II Water Soluble
Neocolor II water-soluble wax oil pastels highlight the enormous innovative capabilities of the Maison Caran d’Ache. Created in 1972 as the continuation of the famous Neocolor I range, they offer boundless creative possibilities for artists and beginners alike. Basing their work on the existing excellent qualities – exceptional coverage, smoothness and extreme lightfastness –, the craftsmen of the Manufacture added water solubility, a property greatly appreciated by connoisseurs of the Maison from all manner of artistic fields and from school age upwards. Neocolor II can be used for all forms of creativity, ranging from drawings on dry or wet materials, monotypes, impregnation, wet drawing, glazing or rainbow gradation. With 84 colours, the entire range offers almost unlimited scope for the imagination, to the point where even experienced artists once more see things through the eyes of a child, thereby liberating the purest of all creative energies: that of the sheer wonderment evoked by colours.
Neopastel
With its soft, velvety texture and high pigment content, the Neopastel oil pastel offers artists and Fine Art teachers and students a flexible medium with strong colours. Developed in the Caran d’Ache workshops on the advice of expert pastel artists, Neopastel is a must with its huge range of 96 luminous hues, incorporating a wide selection of grey, warm and cold tones. Neopastel offers excellent coverage making it suitable for a wealth of applications and artistic combinations: from lines to flat-wash, blending to stencilling, or batik effect to sgrafitto in multiple layers. Its wide 10mm diameter, refined texture, water resistance and excellent lightfastness make it ideally suited for use on diverse materials, be they tinted or dark. Non-drying, non-oxidisable and heat resistant, Neopastel is also soluble in turpentine and can be used with ease for oil painting on canvas.

Working with Schmincke’s finest extrasoft pastels leads you back to the origin of colour and is a real painting experience rather than simple drawing. They contain only the purest medium fine ground artists’ pigments, which are in the highest possible concentration. Contrastingly, the binding agent content, is kept to a minimum, which ensures a stable compound. In order to guarantee the highest quality it is necessary to manufacture Schmincke pastels using special recipes which avoid the use of machinery during manufacture. ‘Worm extruders’ form the pre-kneaded dough into round skeins, which are then detached by hand and cut in a wirestrung frame. The damp sticks have to dry for around eight days before they can be labelled and packed by hand. This is a costly and time consuming process, however it is the only way Schmincke can guarantee homogenous quality and smoothness in all the production cycles, in order that the artist can be assured that his favourite colour shade is consistant throughout our range of finest extra-soft artists’ pastel colours. In 1949, Parisian painter Henri GOETZ approached Henri SENNELIER the famous artist materials manufacturer, about creating a wax colour stick for his friend Pablo PICASSO. Picasso, a long-time Sennelier customer and a frequent visitor to their store across the street from the Louvre museum, was looking for a medium that could be used freely on a variety of surfaces without fading or cracking. Their collaboration produced the incomparable SENNELIER oil pastels. Originally available in a palette of classic hues, the colour selection was expanded with the addition of metallic and iridescent hues. Beyond these classic hues a selection of unique shades is available, and in particular a gradation of greys, required for a balanced palette. This evolution is the fruit of a long-standing collaboration with European and North American painters, who have worked with our company in developing an exceptional palette of shades.
